showing off tom's first pedicure; he chose eagles' green, of course!

while the pets have been keeping me busy, i have made time for my own summer fun! since the year started, i've had a week blocked off in july to spend time with family in the outer banks! although it rained half the time, we still enjoyed our vacation in a place far from home, reconnecting with extended family who we don't see often enough!

a couple weeks later, tom and i flew to chicago for the weekend. we stayed in a hotel downtown; the same one we stayed at back in january. this season, we spent more time walking around outside and got to experience a FULL boat tour (our january tour was cut short because the water was frozen).

it's been a great season for reading, too! this year, i'm not reading your typical "beach reads." in June, i read "contact" by carl sagan written in 1985, and later released as a film starring jodie foster. the book follows the life of astronomer eleanor arroway from 1970s to early 2000s when earth receives extra-terrestrial contact and how human respond!

while in the outer banks, i read "arrival" by ted chiang: short stories that provoke thoughts about human life and morality, including "story of your life" which inspired the film "arrival" starring amy adams.

Both mentioned films are ones i can watch again and again!

during the chicago getaway, my read was "accidentally on purpose" by kristen kish: her life story of being raised by a caucasian family in michigan as a korean baby and her journey through the culinary world in her 20s and 30s, the formative years! even if you don't know kristen from top chef, i recommend this book! there's something about reading how other people have stumbled through life that reminds me that there is no such thing as perfection or the right time.

Now, it's back to Animal Lovers Book Club!!!

this month, we are reading "alex & me" by irene pepperberg; "how a scientist and a parrot discovered a hidden world of animal intelligence - and formed a deep bond in the process."

i started the audiobook and i'm hooked! irene pepperberg's life before alex is already a rollercoaster of self-discovery starting in 1960's america, a very different world for women! and this book is a peek at women in science!

sidenote: i landed on this book because it was recommended by Trixie Mattel, a drag queen i follow on socials. Trixie LOVES parrots so it was no surprise that this book was on their radar, but finding the recommendation just after our last read (lion in the living room) was an answer from the universe!

i hope to see you in the Facebook group! what are you reading this summer?
